Iowa state CME Requirements

In Iowa, physicians are required to complete 40 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™  every two years as follows.

Topic	Credits	Details
General	40 credits every 2 years	Category 1 Up to credits may be carried over from previous license renewal period.
Identifying child abuse	2 credits within 6 months of employment 1 additional credit every 3 years	Required for physicians with specialties requiring this training such as those providing primary health care to children. Approved course only.  All valid mandatory reporter training certificates issued prior to July 1, 2019 remain effective for 5 years.
Identifying dependent adult abuse	2 credits within 6 months of employment 1 additional credit every 3 years	Required for physicians with specialties requiring this training such as those providing primary health care.  Approved course only.  All valid mandatory reporter training certificates issued prior to July 1, 2019 remain effective for 5 years.
End-of-life care	2 credits every 5 years	Training must be related to end-of-life, not palliative care. Required for any physician who have provided or are expected to provide end-of-life care such as these specialties:  Primary care Emergency physicians Family physicians General practice physicians Internists Neurologists Pain medicine specialists Psychiatrists
Pain management	2 credits every 5 years	Required for physicians prescribing opioids. For those with permanent or special license on January 1. 2019, you have until January 1, 2024 to complete chronic pain management training and shall have to complete the training every 5 years after.  Topics should include Recommendations on limitations on dosages and the length of prescriptions Risk factors for abuse Nonopioid and nonpharmacologic therapy options
